Food Phobia: Being Afraid to Eat
Most of us have fears. Some of us have such intense fears, though, that the thought of whatever we are intensely afraid of can send one into a panic attack. One such phobia some individuals experience is food phobia.
Food phobias encompass a variety of fears, including fear of mushrooms to fear of constipation. Here is a list of some of the food phobias individuals may suffer from:
-Acerophobia: Fear of sourness
-Consectaleophobia: Fear of chopsticks
-Emetophobia: Fear of vomiting
-Cibophobia: Fear of food
-Frigophobia: Fear of cold things
-Disophobia: Fear of drinking
-Carnophobia: Fear of meat
-Alliumphobia: Fear of garlic
-Alektorophobia: Fear of chicken
-Coprastasophobia: Fear of constipation
-Geumophobia: Fear of taste
-Hygrophobia: Fear of liquids
-Thermophobia: Fear of hot things
-Sitophobia: Fear of eating
-Mycophobia: Fear of mushrooms
This is only a partial list of food phobias, but it should give you an idea of the variety of phobias individuals can have regarding food.
What Causes Food Phobia?
Like all phobias, the cause of food phobia is often a prior experience in which trauma was combined with food somehow. Other times, individuals can develop food phobias from watching a move, television, or another person experience trauma involving food.
How to Treat It?
The most common method for treating phobias is exposure therapy, involving gradual exposure to the feared stimulus.
Other therapeutic techniques may also be beneficial for the treatment of food phobias.
