Stop Racing Thoughts in Their Tracks!

Published by pinkink at 7:35 pm under overcoming anxiety Edit This

I didn’t get to sleep until 4am this morning! For some reason, my mind wouldn’t stop racing. I wasn’t anxious about anything in particular. My mind simply wouldn’t quiet down.

I finally got up and read a book for a while and then went back to bed and fell asleep.

Do you ever experience this? You want to go to sleep, but you can’t because your mind keeps racing and you cannot get it to quiet down? If so, you might want to try one of these things to help put your mind at ease:

-Read a book: Read a good book. Just make sure it’s not something that’s going to upset or scare you before you try to go back to sleep!

-Write in a journal: Write in your journal. Write about what you are thinking about, any worries you have, etc. Writing down how you are thinking and feeling can clear your mind so you can go to sleep.

-Pray: If you believe in a Higher Power, pray. Praying oftentimes provides a sense of relief and peace.

-Meditate: If you can sit still long enough and focus your concentration, try meditating. Meditation will help you clear your mind successfully!

-Talk it out: If you have a spouse who isn’t asleep or doesn’t mind you waking him or her up, talk with your spouse about what’s bothering you or about what you are thinking about. Alternatively, if you have a friend you know is still awake at the hour you are up, call your friend and talk about what’s bothering you.

I hope these tips help you the next time you cannot sleep due to anxiety or racing thoughts.

welcome to my world… It’s 6:30AM and still up… day in and day out it the same… now I have to go take a pill or i’ll be up all day and night again. For me, and you all might get a kick out of this, what put me right to sleep is putting my kids to sleep… we horse around, tell stories, and my 5 year old always snuggles up next to me and boom, i’m out… I think it’s the comfort factor… not to sure.

I need to have the radio or tv on… silence is bad for me cause of the ringing in my ears… I just gets louder and louder.

    Any way get post…

If I can’t get to sleep I usually take a long warm shower, sitting down. Yes, I love to sit in the shower with my eyes closed listening to what resembles a waterfall of some sort. Helps me to relax and let go of the day.

    Great post!

Good article. I’ve also found that listening to some music or one of those ‘thunderstorm’ CDs helps distract my thoughts as well.
