Good Leadership Affects Employees’ Mental Health
Have you ever noticed how your boss can affect your mental health? A new study indicates good leadership promotes good mental well-being and less job stress.
The study was actually a meta-analysis, a review of several of the best quality studies on leadership and mental health that exist today.
Good leadership was constituted by bosses and supervisors who treated their employees considerately, providing intellectual stimulation and inspirational motivation, and supplying social support.
Employees who experienced good leadership were 40% more likely to be in the highest job well-being category, which is constituted by having low levels of anxiety, job stress, and depression.
Good leadership was also found to be associated with a 27% reduction in sick days taken and a 46% reduction in disability pensions.
It is clear that good leadership makes a difference in workers’ mental and physical health, and it may be advisable for managers, bosses, and supervisors to take leadership workshops or courses in order to develop the best leadership skills possible for their employees’ benefit.
Personally, I have had bosses with good leadership qualities and those with poor leadership skills, and I definitely noticed a difference in my mental and physical health under bosses with different leadership abilities. Not only was I happier with a boss who gave social support and motivation, but I was also more likely to come into work even if I didn’t feel well when I had a boss with good leadership skills.
